My Once Obliterated Self-Esteem

$750.00

My Once Obliterated Self-Esteem is an original painting from my On The Scenic Path Collection

18"W x 24"H in mixed media on stretched canvas (2024).

Struggling during a particularly dark season, I was consumed by a total lack of confidence in my perception of reality. I knew my self-esteem had been shattered, but I hoped that I would one day feel like myself (for the first time in my life). In a teary meditation on my studio floor, I wrote a poem that I hoped would one day ring true in my soul:  “In the ashes of my once obliterated self esteem, a garden grows.”  This poem was the seed of inspiration from which three paintings grew: My Once Obliterated Self-Esteem;  In Those Ashes, A Garden Grows;  and Soul Nourished, I Bloom Anew.

This piece, My Once Obliterated Self-Esteem, reflects what life felt like in the wake of my devastation. The world felt ashen and gray as the responsibilities of life piled up before me. With the future looming ahead, every action and challenge felt insurmountable.

Featuring a dark and rocky landscape with a long road ahead, this painting comments on what remains after a devastating loss. The foreground features a solitary bloom rising amongst weeds and dying flowers, reflecting the first signs of renewal—the moment when possibility begins to return, even before the path ahead is clear.

This painting helped me stay in my present moment during that dark season. It is a visual reminder to stop and smell the flowers, even the weird, ugly ones that are first to return after great destruction.
