Presence

Presence is an original painting from my Everything Ripples Collection.

The Everything Ripples Collection includes water inspired pieces unified in meaning, commenting on the interconnectedness of humanity and demonstrating how our individual states contribute to our shared state of consciousness.

Presence comments on the ability of time- any time that's already happened or times that maybe never will- to invade the present moment. Time is represented as interconnecting, often competing rings of circles. In the composition, Past, Present, and Future occupy distinct spaces, but sometimes interweave and mingle together, sharing the same space in a single moment. The piece comments on the intentional effort required to stay in the present moment- to be untethered from other times and spaces and exist only in the now.

This piece was made during a time when I was searching for and struggling to find presence. My mind was often invaded by moments and relationships in my past that were troubling. Trying to escape and dreaming of a future where my problems no longer existed, I painted Presence. 

This piece is a reminder that maintaining conscious presence is an intentional and active process, one that requires effort. As the past threatens to pull me in with incomplete renderings of moments long gone, the future looms, and my fate hangs in the balance. It’s a reminder that it is ok to feel a little unsteady- time is always closing in around us, choking us with suffering, but only if we allow it.
